to find out how long does your battery lasts at the moment follow this Settings->General->Usage

  • Don’t let your iPhone overheat. You should try to avoid leaving your iPhone in the sun or placing it anywhere the temperature is too high. Try to keep it in an under 35-degrees environment and that would be great.
  • Always make sure that standard charger supplied with the set charges iPhone battery. It will not only ensure you iPhone’s warranty, but also keep the iPhone safe from damage. Lithium-ion batteries need to be charged with an accurate charging rate and smooth voltage without any interruptions. Local chargers won’t provide the regulated voltage, which can slowly degrade the quality of the iPhone battery.
  • Turn off 3G when not in range. If you are in a place with little or none 3G coverage, you can go to Settings->General->Network and set Enable 3G to off. Your phone will always look for 3G signal and draw extra energy in the process. If you are sure no 3G signal is there, turn it off
  • Avoid charging iPhone battery in vehicle. These chargers are not accurate and charge the battery quickly, and it adversely affects the battery. Although Apple has developed few vehicle chargers, but these chargers are not as good as a charger provided with original equipment manufacturer.
  • Bluetooth have a similar battery usage as Wi-Fi, so there’s not much reason to leave it on if you are not using it (I believe that the most common usage for bluetooth today is the headsets and car kits).
  • Music EQ will have a significant battery usage if you listen to your songs for many hours everyday, as it uses more processing power. So if you want to charge less your iphone, it is another thing you may consider turning it off.
  • If you have no use for the GPS, turn it off by going to Settings->General->Location Services. The GPS module is a really a battery drainer.
  • Auto-Brightness is a Great feature apple made to make the battery last longer. It uses iphone’s camera to adjust brightness based on the lighting conditions outside, so it will automatically set, for example, to make it less bright when you are on a dark place.
  • E-mail savvy guys tend to get aggressive me Push/Fetch settings and set it to minimum so that they get to know about new mails ASAP. But if you can survive by getting to know about new emails a few minutes late then you can save some precious battery life. Push settings work only for MobileMe and for other providers you have the Fetch settings. You can set MobileMe to Fetch also if you do not receive work emails on your MobileMe account.
  • Turning down the volume of your ringtone is an option, but the one that would significantly save battery life is turning off the vibrate option. Vibration uses considerable amount of  battery, so turn it off if you are in a silent environment.
  • if you carry your iPhone around in a case charging the phone while it’s in that case may generate more heat than is healthy for your phone. Overheating is bad for both battery capacity and battery life, so if your iPhone gets a little toasty when you charge it in its case, take it out of the case in future before you charge it.

These tips should suffice in increasing the life of your iphone battery but for a more detailed guide Apple has put up an informative and rather amusing site to help iPhone users keep their batteries in good shape.
